I turned off the car and took a deep breath. Looking slowly up into the pink sky, I began to watch the golden sun go to sleep. The beach seemed deserted, quiet, but peaceful. I opened my door and put my feet out on the soft sand. I started taking my shoes off, then my socks. I threw them in the passenger seat, and then shut the door. I looked out over horizon of the lake and started walking towards the still water. With each step I took, I could feel the warm sand crunch between my toes. Then suddenly, a sharp rock, but not sharp enough to break the skin. Closer and closer to the calm water, I began sinking deeper in the sand. It was comforting, the silence, tranquility, and warmth of the faint sun. There is a slight breeze, warm, but†¦show more content†¦When I opened my eyes, all the birds were gone except for one. The bird was like me. It didnt want to fly away; it wanted to stay there on that lonely beach and watch the sunset of a lifetime. No sound, just the wind blowin g thunderously through my ears. And the waves crashing down on the wet sand. It made the hair on my arms stand up and I got a chill, but I didnt move. I took another deep breath and started walking towards where the water meets the sand. With each step I took, the sand got cooler and cooler. Then, with a final step, it turned cold. My feet were in the cold water and sand. It was sudden, wet, but soft. The dark blue water drew back in. Thrusting violently, crashing everywhere, the lake threw its cool brisk body into my dry legs, scaring the lone bird away with its unique destructive sound. The wind started to pick up a little. It was extra cold on the wet spots of my body. The water was as black as silence, with only a slight reflection of the sun. I could not tell the lake was there. The sun took the lake with it, to share with someone else. I stood there for a couple more seconds, and before I knew it, the sun was gone. The colors became more independent as the shadow of the sun le ssened. Then, it was gone. Without trace, sound, or movement. Greek Religion The ancient Greeks with their brilliant and imaginative spirit created a complete order of things that functioned harmoniously in the infinite world that contained them. Although its exact origins are lost in time, Greek religion is thought to date from about the 2d millenium B.C., when the culture of Aryan invaders fused with those of the Aegean and Minoan peoples who had inhabited the region of Greece from Neolithic times [1]. The beginning and the genesis of this world occupied the ancient Greeks in much the same way it did the early people of every civilization. In Our Time Ernest Hemingway Essay Ernest Hemingway lived his life as he wanted. His writing touched the hearts of millions. His sentences were short and to the point but his novels strong and unforgettable. He wrote about what he felt like writing about. On July 21, 1899, Ernest Hemingway was born. He was created by Dr. Clarence Edmonds and Grace Hall Hemingway. His hometown was a small town named Oak Park. Oak Park was in Illinois. His father was a practicing doctor, and later taught him how to hunt and fish. His mother on the other hand had wished that he would become a professional musician. Hemingway did not like his mother and when he grew up he would call her the old bitch. He grew up in a somewhat religious environment. He went to Oak Park and River Forest High School, which is where he realized his writing gift. Besides writing, other activities that he loved included swimming, and boxing. When he was18 years old he had an important decision to make he could either move to Kansas city, which was growing more and more every day, or he could go to collage. His final choice was that he would move to Kansas City. In Kansas City he got a job as a cub reporter on the Kansas City Star. At the train station his father, who latter on in Ernests life would commit suicide which would totally disgust Ernest, kissed his son goodbye with tears in his eyes. This exact moment in time would be the soul purpose for a book he wrote called For Whom the Bell Tolls. One of the reasons why he wrote that book is because he felt so much older than his father at that time that he could hardly bear it any longer. While he was at Kansas City he was quite and did not stand out much. He stayed to himself. He went through a little culture shock due to the fact that Kansas City was a lot more complex than Oak Hill was. His writing style was first introduced by the Star. His writing was brief, and to the point. His writing had to be like that at the time because he was a news writer, but he would carry that style over to fiction when the time came. In May of 1918, Hemingway wanted to join the Army but could not due to a defective left eye which he inherited from his mother. Instead of joining the Army he joined the Red Cross. Later on in his Red Cross years he became Second Lieutenant of the Red Cross. While he was overseas he was sneaking smokes and chocolate into the soldiers he was hit in the leg by an Austrian machine gun. He also got over a hundred pieces of metal stuck in his body. Even though he was in extreme pain he managed to carry a wounded soldier to safety which was a hundred yards away. For his courageous action he won the Italian Medal of Valor. He spent all of his recovery time at the Ospedale Croce Rossa American, in Milan. His stay in Italy was the perfect place for his novel A farewell to arms. He was allowed to go home after his stay at the American Hospital in Italy. He returned to Oak Hill without any complaints. He lived with his mom until he refused to get a job was kicked out of the house. After that he moved to Chicago and got a job writing for the Toronto Star and was a sparring partner for boxers. It was in Chicago that he met a very pretty lady named Elizabeth Hadly Richerdson. Hemingway badly wanted to marry her but money was a problem so they moved to Paris. Because he had a child on the way and no real publications, he decided to move back to Canada. It was there that John Hadly Hemingway was born in 1923. His nick name was Bumby, that was also the name he preferred to be called by.When he was in the Spanish was he fought the way he wanted to fight, he attended dinner parties in London. The parties were way away from the fighting lines (D-Day had already passed by now). When it was allover Ernest said What I enjoyed most about the party is that these old friends still care enough to come so far. The thing about old friends now s that there are so few of them There where a couple shocks in his life. One of them was the death of one of his closest friend which died of cancer. Another shock was when he was forced to move out of his only true home during the Cuban revolution came there, and the last shock was when his black lab died, he was his one true companion. He would lie at Ernests feet when he was writing. On April 23rd 1961, Ernest tried to kill himself by putting a gun to his head. At about 7:30 a.m. on July 2, 1961, Mary Hemingway, his wife at the time, heard a gun go off in the other room. She hurried towards the sound of the gunshot. Down stairs by the gun rack she saw Ernest with his favorite 12 gauge shot gin whish was laid with silver. That shotgun had been made just for him. Without going into details, I fought with a full manuscript edit for almost eight hours one day this week. I edited an entire novel only for the edits not to save properly. There’s a long story about a corrupted file. Needless to say, I cursed and shed a few sloppy tears on my napkin beside the dinner hub On top of that, I learned my deadline was changing a little bit for Tidewater Murder, which really crimped my style pertaining to a certain speaking engagement. That change sucked the wind right out of my sails for a while. Maybe I shed a couple more tears. Hub So, once I reached a stopping place, and settled down, I made myself write this editorial. Why? I want to wipe that smile off that successful face and ask them to SHOW me. Quit TELLING. I want them to show me through detailed anecdotes. . . 1. How they almost quit one night over a rejection;2. How they wanted to strangle an editor;3. How they behaved when they lost an entire story on the computer;4. How, after ten chapters, they realized the story had no purpose. Or how about answering these questions: 1. How much money did they really make on that self-pubbed book? 2. Did they ever make a fool of themselves with an editor/agent?3. When did they make a bad decision on selling rights?4. After expenses, how much money do they really net after a traditional publisher kept 92% of the print proceeds and 75% of the ebook gross earnings?5. Was there ever a time he was a bad writer?6. How did that one-star review REALLY make him feel? Give me the dirt . . . all of it. Why? Because I need to know what’s coming at me. I need to understand that there will benights like this, where I doubt myself and crave an easier life. We write for the satisfaction. But no one tells us about the nights we feel like our writing sucks, or that the planets are aligned against us. Those are the times that define us in this profession. Coming out on the other side of those bad nights intact, with the shards of our wits swept up off the floor, with lessons painfully learned leaving deep scars behind, makes us decent writers. No pain, no glory. Okay. Big sigh. Excuse me while I return to beat up my keyboard.
